Care After Chest Construction Surgery

This post-surgical guideline was developed in collaboration with Dr. Homan Cheng to help provide people with direction following Top Surgery.

What to do following Chest Construction Surgery

There are huge deficiencies and knowledge gaps in transgender care, so we wanted to help the best we could for this type of gender-affirming surgery. There are a lot of resources online, but many are vague, a little confusing, sometimes insulting, and not always applicable to peoples’ situations 🤔

In a nutshell, chest construction surgery is different to a mastectomy as more breast tissue and lymph nodes remain intact to improve chest contouring, and the nipples, areolas, and their nerve structures are usually retained. As such, rehabilitation following this chest surgery is quite different!

We hope members of the 2S/LGBTQQIA+ community who’ve had this surgery (or are preparing for it) find it helpful 🤗 Feel free to share this page and provide us with any feedback. We’re only a call, text, or email away if you need help or any clarification.

We also encourage people to reach out to Trans Care BC for more information regarding surgery considerations, types of surgeries, surgical care planning, preparing for surgery, referrals and funding.
