This post-surgical guideline was developed in collaboration with Dr. Homan Cheng (Plastic Surgeon in Victoria, BC) to help provide people with direction following their Top Surgery.
We understand there are huge deficiencies and knowledge gaps in transgender care, so we wanted to do our part and help the best we could in this type of gender-affirming surgery. There are a lot of resources online, but a lot of them are vague, a little confusing, and not always applicable to peoples’ situations 🤔
In a nutshell, this surgery is different to a mastectomy as more breast tissue and lymph nodes remain intact to improve chest contouring, and the nipples, areolas, and their nerve structures are usually retained. As such, rehabilitation following this chest surgery is also different!
We hope members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community who’ve had this surgery (or are preparing for it) find it helpful 🤗 Feel free to share this page and provide us with any feedback. We’re only a call, text, or email away if you need help or any clarification.
We also encourage people to reach out to Trans Care BC (if they haven’t already) for more information regarding surgery considerations, types of surgeries, surgical care planning, preparing for surgery, referrals and funding.
